Card Payment Security
The 'Net has been around for a while, but many still worry
about the safety of buying online. Here is information on the common fears:
1. Hackers can vacuum my card details from the net and use
them to buy goods for themselves
This is a much-stated rumour, but with good security precautions, it's not
a credible threat. We use the "SSL" system to encrypt the link between
your browser and our web site when you are entering your payment details. We
use the "PGP" system to encrypt data from the web site to our offices.
We do not store your details on any web site so there's nothing online to hack.
We also use a customer ID system - whereby you just quote your customer ID when
placing orders. Your ID is no good to anyone but you. We use it to find your
postal and payment details in our off-line database.
If the unthinkable happened, your personal liability is likely
to be nil. If you see a charge on your statement and you dispute it, the card
company will contact the retailer and ask for proof - a signature or card impression.
He won't have either, and so will be "charged back" for the purchase.
Basically - you will get your money back. This is why card fraud is more of
a concern for retailers like us than for customers like you.
No one gives a second thought when they hand their credit card
to the waiter after a meal. But he can easily copy the details and use them
fraudulently. In practice it's not a concern and there's little reason to be
any more concerned when using your card on the net.
2. The online company will take my money and I'll never
see the goods Any company with "merchant status" (like us) has
been carefully scrutinised by the bank behind its card-processing facility.
We're supported by one of the "Big Four" UK High Street banks. The
bank looks at the people behind the business, as well as the business plan,
trading history and the technical aspects of the web site. If the bank has granted
a business merchant status for Internet transactions you can be sure they meet
very high standards. If a company misbehaves or receives many complaints against
it, the supporting bank may withdraw merchant status, and with it - the lifeblood
of the business. If you look at our web site, you can imagine the investment
we've made to become a successful online retailer. Treating customers badly
is the very LAST thing on our minds. We can only succeed by giving you great
products & service. We want you to tell your friends and come back for more.
We're going to take very good care of you.
3. If anything is unsatisfactory, the company will exploit
my possible embarrassment to rip me off We pride ourselves on our standards
of customer service, and we've had fewer than 10 complaints in the 2 years we've
been in business! We're encouraging customer feedback from the site and by e-mail.
The online form is specifically so that people can tell us what they don't like
with anonymity. Although we can't fix it for an anonymous customer, we want
to know what they didn't like. Our guest book will shortly go live, offering
another feedback mechanism. Our terms & conditions
are rated by customers as better than average. We look forward to the day when
online reputation managers like DOOYOO.COM
will expose the companies giving poor service, and recognise those doing
better. We're decent people.
